María Jesús Lorenzana Somoza and Covadonga Toca Carús were able to see our innovation projects first-hand, which apply AI to healthcare, active ageing and the optimisation of administrative processes.
The Regional Minister for Economy and Industry of the Xunta de Galicia, María Jesús Lorenzana Somoza, and the director of the Galician Institute for Economic Promotion (IGAPE), Covadonga Toca Carús, visited our head office in Santiago de Compostela on Friday, where they had the opportunity to gain a first-hand insight into our activities, our main areas of specialisation, and our commitment to innovation and technological development.
The regional minister, María Jesús Lorenzana, highlighted Balidea as “one of the leading technology companies in Galicia and Spain, well-established after 25 years of experience, which demonstrates the autonomous community’s innovative strength and its capacity to create jobs”. She emphasised the company’s involvement in the Galician Regional Government’s support schemes for artificial intelligence, as well as its leading role in cybersecurity and defence – a field in which it has been awarded specific certifications, offering potential for partnership and collaboration with the Galician administration.
For his part, our CEO, Lorenzo Rodríguez Currais, expressed our commitment to supporting the industry: “As a technology company, we act as a bridge between many sectors.” “We are, of course, already developing major projects in the field of AI, and the support of the Regional Ministry and IGAPE is essential for making the necessary investments and consolidating solutions,” he added.
During the visit, they were also accompanied by María del Carmen López, Innovation Manager; Eva Yáñez, Health Manager; Pilar Gómez, Director of People; and Óscar Vázquez, Director of Projects and Services, Pre-sales and ICT Consultancy, who outlined our history and development and explained the main strategic areas we are currently working on.
Since its inception, Balidea has been developing significant projects that have established it as a leading player in public health and digital health at a national level; it has expanded internationally, undertaking projects for Copenhagen City Council, the United Nations and the OECD; and it has experienced significant growth in innovation, with a clear focus on agent-based AI and cybersecurity; all of which is the result of a strategy based on professionalisation, internationalisation and innovation.
Three publicly funded innovation projects
Following a tour of our facilities, the delegation was able to learn, through a series of demonstrations, about three of the innovation projects we are currently working on: ANOTAI, an artificial intelligence agent designed to optimise administrative processes and improve patient care in home hospitalisation services; AI-VIDDA, a joint research project aimed at prolonging the independence and healthy life expectancy of older people; and Balidea AI Suite, an initiative seeking to drive Balidea’s digital transformation through the implementation of AI-based solutions in areas such as Human Resources and Software Development.
It is worth noting that the three projects form part of Balidea’s commitment to innovation and are supported by various public programmes, including initiatives promoted by the Galician Institute for Economic Promotion (IGAPE). Specifically, ANOTAI is 25 per cent co-financed by the Autonomous Community of Galicia’s own funds, whilst AI-VIDDA is co-financed by the European Union through the Galicia FEDER 2021–2027 programme and subsidised by the Galician Innovation Agency of the Xunta de Galicia and the Galician Institute for Economic Promotion (IGAPE). For its part, Balidea IA Suite is being developed under the IG408M-IA360 call for proposals (grants aimed at boosting business innovation through the experimental development and application of artificial intelligence within the Galician industrial sector and its value chain, linked to sectors of strategic importance or particular relevance to the Galician Regional Government).
The event concluded with a fruitful meeting during which we were able to share our views on the evolution of the technology sector and the vital role of innovation, research and talent in enhancing the competitiveness of organisations and public administrations. Furthermore, we were able to discuss the main challenges and opportunities posed by the integration of technologies such as artificial intelligence, and the need to continue promoting initiatives that enable their benefits to be channelled into the productive sector and society.
At Balidea, we would like to thank the Regional Minister for Economy and Industry and the Director of IGAPE for their interest in learning about our work first-hand. The support of the institutions and their collaboration with the Galician innovation ecosystem are essential for driving forward R&D&I projects and ensuring that new technological solutions reach businesses, public authorities and, ultimately, society as a whole.
