A virtual assistant, accessible via mobile phone, tablet or robot, that improves the quality of life for elderly people and provides social and health services
A virtual assistant for monitoring patients at home
The objective is to establish a communication channel with patients using a voice-enabled robotic virtual assistant. GiDi will use language technologies to classify patients according to the severity of their condition and implement personalised action protocols.

The project started in June 2022 and finished in October 2024

Budget: 1.109.785€

Partners: Balidea (leader) + IDMind

Collaborators: Multimedia Technologies (GTM) at the University of Vigo and the IDIS Foundation
Support received
This project has been subsidised by the Centre for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI).
It has also received funding from the joint programme Eurostars-3, co-financed by CDTI and the European Union's Horizon Europe Framework Programme for Research and Innovation.
Balidea
We ensure that the assistant communicates in a natural way
Balidea's focus is on the conversational sphere. GiDi enables chronic patients to be monitored remotely. It carries out screening protocols designed by medical specialists through conversation with patients, collecting real-time data that is sent to medical services for the implementation of personalised protocols.
In collaboration with medical specialists, Balidea has also developed a system for predicting patient outcomes using artificial intelligence. This enables medical services to prioritise patients predicted to have a less favourable outcome.
IDMind
We ensure that the assistant moves in a friendly manner.
IDMind's role is primarily focused on designing the robot. They are developing a social robot that will move autonomously around users' homes, monitoring them from a medical point of view and being able to locate, identify and communicate with them in the most human and friendly way possible.
The Multimedia Technologies Group (GTM) at the University of Vigo is supporting us in the development of conversational interfaces as Balidea collaborators. The IDIS Foundation is responsible for defining the medical screenings and protocols to be implemented.
Challenges
Addressing the challenges posed by home hospitalisation programmes, which rely on professionals visiting patients.
Providing real-time information about patients, as well as prioritisation functions.
Enabling healthcare teams to focus on patients who need medical attention.

Impact
From an Ethics from Design perspective, the users themselves participated in the design and validation of the solution. GiDi is a success story in the application of open-source language technologies in a medical setting. It supports professionals in routine tasks and provides patient information in real time. It has great potential to transform home healthcare.
Features

Simulation of the screening protocol
It allows users to initiate and simulate the screening protocol, as well as report measurements.

Scorecard
Medical specialists can access real-time patient information and receive alerts.

Use of multiple languages
Conversations in both Galician and Spanish. It recognises the user's language and adapts accordingly.

Natural Language Processing
It understands patients by identifying keywords and remembering previous conversations.
